Compensation for flight delays help

Hi,
On a recent trip from Manchester to Orlando with Thomas Cook (never again) we encountered delays on both the flights. The outbound flight was delayed for 2 hours, and the inboard entertainment was broke for the entire 9 hour plus flight. The inbound flight was delayed by 11 hours. For much of the 11 hour delay we had no idea what was going on.
We weren't told the reason for delay for the outbound flights, but the inbound flights were delayed because the weather radars, of which there are 2 were both broke and needed repairing.
I have read much of the guide to claiming compensation for flight delays on this site, but I was just after a bit of further clarification.
Does it sound like we have valid grounds for a refund? If so, how do we initiate the claim process?
Thanks.

briefly it sounds like - outbound flight, nothing due if arrival was less than 3 hours late
Sounds like you have a claim for the return flight for EU compensation
You would not be claiming a refund, you would be claiming compensation (a refund would have been paid if you chose not to travel on the delayed flight)0 -
Was it an EU airline? You will only have a chance if it was.0
