I never thought about buying our own alchol. Were planning to get married in 2015 and I wanted a open bar but didn't want a £3000 tab at the end of it!! (Our family is pretty heavy drinkers lol)
Might just be able to pull it off..thanks for this threadPeople don't know what they want until you show them.0 -
Geordie Ben, there seems to be some OTT scaremongering going on, on this thread, and suggestions of why don't you just have a free bar.
I think, if you make it clear (just for the stress heads) that they are suggested donations, it is different from SELLING booze. It is a private function, not in a pub. In my mind no different from having the reception at home and doing the same. The chances of you getting 'raided by the police' I would estimate at zilch.
Most people could not afford to fund a free bar these days (as we can't) we are getting married in 6 weeks. Some folk take advantage of a free bar in a big way and drinking more than they would have done otherwise, and a load of completely w@nkered people at your big day so to be honest, even if I could afford a free bar, I wouldn't have one.
I went to a wedding last year where there was a free bar, and was appauled by the state an awful lot of guests got into - the younger relatives were falling over, passing out, arguing, being sick etc. They really went for it. The bride said afterwards that it did put a massive dampner on her day as by half way through the event, a good proportion of her guests were completely sh1tfaced.It caused a massive falling out within the family.
Are you suggesting you'd charge people for a drink if it was in your own home???
As to whether guests can be trusted to behave I suppose you need to know your guests.0 -

I'm sure some people genuinely cannot afford a free bar but when I hear of weddings costing ridiculous amounts and still no free bar I have to wonder why.
I went to a wedding quite a few years ago where the bride's parents were very well off. Her dad was telling everyone how she was going to have the best wedding ever. An absolute fortune was spent on flowers at the reception alone and her dad got china especially made with her and her groom's initials on. Yet we all had to buy our own drinks. This to me is mean and no I am not really a drinker - I probably have 1 maybe 2.
Me and OH had a free bar at our wedding - neither of us would have wanted it any other way and I can honestly say no one took advantage of it and no one got really drunk. Maybe we just have unusual friends, family and work colleagues but I think it is sad if people really just drink and drink because it is freeThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
We had a free bar at our wedding but the venue were happy for us to buy our own spirits so the only thing we paid for at bar prices was beer and mixers, most people seemed to drink gin and tonic which is cheap enough. However we aren't the kind to befriend heavy drinkers or invite anyone who might cause trouble/embarrass themselves.0
