thoughts on self inflicted disabilities

Just throwing this in the mix, curious to see replies what are your thoughts on self inflicted disabilities- the drunk/careless driver ending up in a wheelchair, the smoker with emphysema on breathing tubes the overweight person binge eating and ending up not being able to walk and driving a scooter? etc etc

do you think they should be penalised with the amount of help they get on benefits? i know it is not necessarily provable unless they admitted to it

Hmmm ... where do you draw the line? People have accidents doing quite acceptable things like skiing. Some people become disabled as a result of simply crossing the road at the wrong time. Shall we all become agoraphobics?

The majority of health conditions have at least an element of being self-inflicted so where do we draw the line?

Far too complicated to go down this route, can you imagine the end consequences where all state aid varies according to the level of "culpability" of the claimant.
"sorry son you cant get a job because you are too ugly" so that's your fault so no benefits for you.
"you were in a car crash? did you really need to make that journey that day?...... No? well tough titty no disability benefit for you.

i have a genetic condition, so bear no responsibility at all ....

but obviously my parents 'gave it to me', so should they be supporting my extra needs instead of the benefits system?
