Ikea botched up installations and goods

I put this in the wrong thread before...
Ok here we go,

1. Ordered made-to-measure worktop with installation
2. I missed two days work for this (no work, no pay)
3. Installation was obviously bad and poorly done.
4. Old worktops removed and these made-to-measure ones put in place.
5. Ikea offer to replace worktops and install new ones.
6. I ask for refund as it was bad service and bad goods.
7. They said they can do refund for service but cannot do refund for worktops unless they take the worktops that they already cut up badly back, leaving me with nothing... can they do this?? please read on for whole story...

I ordered a made-to-measure worktop from Ikea and installation services from them. Got one of their 'people' to come around and measure up before ordering and based on their measurements went and ordered worktop. My kitchen is quirky because of columns and so cut outs has to be made. Ikea contract the work to other people and so the actual installation was done by someone else.

Booking was made for Friday (July 5), the installers came in the afternoon and immediately said that they would need longer than a day. I called the guy in charge, he said he would try to sort something for Saturday but ended up being Monday (July 8). So nothing done on a Friday and I missed work for that. So no work and lost wages to myself. So I miss work on Monday and a new set of installers came in and did the work in 3 hours, as opposed to the installers who said would take a whole day.

Installation was awful. Gaps around columns and in the corner were huge. Worktop didn't even touch the wall (guy who measured, did the wrong measurements!) and metre corner joint was not even and smooth. Installer blamed this on the worktop being bowed. Now they offered to do the worktops again and I said I could not miss a day off work anymore because I wouldn't get paid. I politely asked for a refund and I would take business somewhere else.

They said they would refund for service but would need to take back goods, leaving me with no worktops and mess. Can they leave me with no worktops as I had the old ones there before??? Can I push for compensation of lost wages due to their poor planning?

Bad planning from start to finish has left me with a bitter and awful experience.

So you expect to pay nothing and keep the worktops?

Of course ikea can take them back if you do not pay for them, they remain their property.

You wouldn't be financially impacted if they did as you are getting a full refund by doing so.

You should be aware though ikea cabinets are a different depth to normal, so the worktops they do are deeper than most.

The days off are to be expected, thinking you can find an alternative at the same cost on a weekend might be wishful thinking I'm afraid.

I would be asking ikea to have the worktops replaced and fitted by someone else at their expense if it were me...

Well let's say I say yes to a new set being ordered and being refitted by someone else.. Where do I stand in terms of compensation of missing the three days? Obviously I also have to miss a day for the delivery of the worktops as well, so I miss nearly a week off work to get this done?

It is expected to miss some time off work, but to miss 3 days unnecessarily is to much for me.

If I want a refund and they want the worktops back that is fine by me, but then would they have to compensate for getting rid of old worktops? How about cleaning of the mess afterwards. The cleaning after the first time took three hours and now it has to be done again?

Ikea ordering new ones and refitting they have to do anyway to rectify their mistake but compensation for missed days off work and cleaning is not included in the replace and refit. And what about the sink and hob being installed and uninstalled again? Who pays for that?

It's called consequential losses, you need to be able to prove them, but you do have rights to them, how much you want to fight for them is up to you.

Tell a manager about your consquential losses and ask for a plumber to be included in the refit.

Have a read of MSE's Failed Delivery guide.

Whilst not exactly the same situation that you are in, it does explain the principles involved when claiming for consequential losses.

Thank you all. Consequential losses is what I was looking for. Will read more and get back to them on Monday. I feel like going all guns blazing but I am not sure that would go far with them. Maybe calm but assertive is the best option.
