What is the riskiest thing I can self-invest my pathetic little pension pot in?

Hi everyone,

I have about £15K in a pension fund currently "invested" with a big name provider in some kind of "lifestyle plan". I have not been contributing to it for some time, and nor can I currently afford to.

So I want to transfer it to a SIPP, and invest the lot in the riskiest vehicle possible. :D

I appreciate that nobody is going to be able to quote specifics such as invest the lot in the "Las Vegas Stick It All On Red" fund, but in general, how would I go about "gambling" my £15K pot such that when i'm 65 it's either worth nothing or absolutely shed loads?

    RBS shares. The future's uncertain.

all in 1 share. which is very risky, regardless of the choice of share.

ideally, 1 share that could either do very well or go bust - e.g. an oil explorer which may or may not find anything which it's economic to extract. if that comes off, pick a different share which faces similar uncertainties. and so on.

but is this actually riskier than you want? :)

Shares in Polymetal - you will then be gambling on gold and silver and Russia and Kazakhstan. Who could ask for more?
Free the dunston one next time too.
  • How long do you have til 65?
The riskiest traditional pension vehicle would be an emerging markets fund, and you could get your fund multiplied a few fold, at best.
If you really do want a gambling style investment, then there's no need to be wilfully reckless. I'd go with a very small portfolio of penny shares (maybe just three companies), then you have some sort of chance of it paying off. I'd be doing a chunk of reading up on current shares in the penny bracket to pick your runners.

pop in to ladbrokes and put the lot on a 6 horse accumulator

just checkout their payout policy first

OP, I know you say you want risk but 15k is still a decent chunk of money, annuity payout wold be low but you could get nearly 4k out tax free as a lump sum which would be good for most people.

If you really want a gamble then I'd put the money into five to ten small companies, maybe mining, oil exploration, technology or biotech, one firm just seems too much of a punt for me, and putting not a few companies increases the chances of picking the next Microsoft, apple, xstrata etc.
  • Thanks for the ideas so far everyone!

Yeah - I checked but unfortunately Betfair aren't an authorised pension provider so I can't stick it all on an horse.

But exactly what I was after - the keywords to look for, penny shares, AIM, emerging market funds etc - thanks!
