And another thing to those people who go on about hobby tax claimers, what about government politicians who fiddle their expenses and are now in for a pay rise, what about those gamblers down at the city, and companies like talk talk and sky tv ripping us off on our bills each month, its dog eat dog I am afraid, if you're entitled to it go and get it.0

See now that's just negativity and snobbery, what about fifty shades of grey? I am a gas engineer, a painter, and I write and sell books on line which make me lots of money. I know for a fact that you can make money on kindle or smash words, I have books on Sony, WH Smith, Apple, Kobo, which make me a handsome profit, so with a bit of luck the OP will start raking it in.0

He doesn't have a viable business - he has a state funded hobby.
I might add his paintings are very very good but his prices are ridiculously high but every year he says I only need to sell a big picture and I can come off benefits...
I have to agree with this, it is whether you have a viable business and compliance should look into more cases in my opinion. The amount of people who set up as self employed stating they work the required hours but make so little or no profit ensuring that they pay no income tax or NI while receiving maximum tax credits is ludicrous. The most potent weapon of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed. But I DO hope to start increasing my earnings as I write more and more books. I have always been very passionate about writing, so I thought, why not try and make a career of it? You know, I really get sick and tired of these people who dismiss writing as just a "hobby". It is NOT just a hobby if you have set up a viable business to run alongside it. I not only write books, but I also offer a freelance writing service to run alongside my authorship. So, I repeat it, it IS a viable business.0 -
Is that how it really works? Silly me, I thought what was yours in terms of benefits was only what the government was prepared to give you!Go and get whats yours
You don't get it. No-one is stopping you writing books and making a business out of it, what we are saying is that until you can make it profitable, you can do it on a part-time basis. If your business was viable, you would get tax credits, however, it seems that whereas you are confident to make a success of it, they are not so convinced. Convince them and they might see it differently. You know, I really get sick and tired of these people who dismiss writing as just a "hobby".0 -

I refer to my previous post - I am currently getting WTC as a self -employed author. He should be getting WTC now.0 -

In another thread you state that you are not working due to illness, and this has seemingly been the case for some time. It sounds like you are one of the people Housing Benefit Officer is referring to - claiming WTC when you should be applying for (and being assessed for) ESA.0 -

Roll on Universal Credit.
It looks like the Tax Credit rules and HMRC reporting rules for self employed income were deliberately designed to help reduce the unemployment statistics by giving Working Tax Credits to people who in all intents and purposes aren't really self employed.
In the real world, without Tax Credits, these bogus/hobby self employed would have starved to death or gone bust as their 'self-employment' isn't viable.
I have made more selling odds and ends on eBay than some of the so called gainfully employed so called self employed claimants I deal with. These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.0
