Returning a used Nexus 7 - security?

Just over 2 weeks ago I purchased a refurbished Nexus 7 from Tesco_Outlet on eBay. It worked fine to start with and I have enjoyed using it. However, yesterday, after charging it from about 25%, for about an hour, I found I could not switch it on at all. After Googling and trying the various combos of suggested fixes, (holding different combinations of the buttons for different lengths of time, charger on/off, connected/not connected, plugged into desktop, taking the back off and checking the battery connection etc etc), I gave up and emailed Tesco. They have asked me to return it for a replacement at their expense.

My worry is....all the info on the tablet! Email addresses, emails, messages, contacts etc. as I cant switch the thing on to wipe it. It is password protected but is there anything I could/should do before posting it off?

What do places like Tesco do with used, returned, faulty goods in a case like this??

They'll be returned to the supplier for a repair/refurb, which will mean a factory restore. Then resold as such.
