I bought a used car from a car supermarket almost a year ago and right from the very beginning have been experiencing problems with it. Following advice of the CAB, the car has subsequently been back to the dealer on at least 8 occasions (one too many chances, I know!) is still not repaired and is virtually unroadworthy. The dealer is arguing that there is no fault with the car, this is despite me consulting my own engineer and paying for an independent engineer to conduct a full inspection. The result of which confirmed that there is a major mechanical defect.
On the advice of the local Trading Standards I had to provide the dealer with a copy of my independent report, which they are saying contradicts what their own investigations have found (which is basically utter rubbish). The dealer has now suggested that I let them carry out an 'independent' inspection of the car. Now baring in mind the last time I spoke to them they said they had already done this, and that their own job sheets were somehow 'independent' I don't hold much hope that they will actually have a truly independent engineer carry out the work. I suspect that the company they appoint will somehow have ties to their own workshop.
I have the following questions; should I allow them to conduct a report, should I allow the to conduct the report as long as it is done by someone that I, myself appoint, or should I head straight to the small claims court?
Many thanks in advance!

I'd ask who they are getting to do the inspection and try to establish how independent it is, and offering a couple of alternatives.0
