High Gas Usage

I am becoming very concerned about my gas usage over the autumn/winter months and was hoping for some advice on what mighht be casusing it.

My usage in Q4 2012 was 11718kWh compared to 6807kWh in Q4 2011 (an increase of 72%)

My usage in Q1 2013 was 15438 kWh copared to 8356kWh in Q1 2012 (an increase of 85%)

I know last winter was particularly cold but I cannot understand what is causing this increase. We have a combi boiler and loft insulation which was installed within the past 12 months.

Any advice as to reasons why my consumption has increased so much is welcome.

As a guess, I suggest it could be related to the gas boiler

... or it could be related to something you have not mentioned ...

It was a long hard Winter, but not so hard that it would explain 72% and 85% increases over the 2 comparitive previous Winter Qtrs.

Were any of these readings listed on an Estimated Bill, or are they readings you have given or taken by a Meter Reader

Do you have a 'Dial' meter with a series of small clocks, each of which has a single hand (All these meters are way beyond their 'Use By Date', difficult to read with even Meter Reders making errors)

Check your bills to see that the meter number on recent bills, is the same as that on old bills

Check your meter to see which type it is:
A METRIC meter will be marked m3 and delivers close to 11 chargeable Kwh for each meter unit
An IMPERIAL meter is marked ft3 and delivers close to 31 chargeable Kwh for each meter unit
On the bill divide the Kwh charged into the meter units - If the bill calculation doesn't match the meter's marking, get onto your supplier immediately

You really should do your own meter readings and record them, then you'd know if you were suddenly using more gas than normal and could do something about it. If you've got estimated bills then read the meter and phone or e-mail the correct one through. There is no advantage in ramping up a big deficit and then being stuck with a big bill.

Take charge, read the meter at least monthly (weekly is better) and record the consumption, economise where you can, work out your own bills and you'll have a decent record of use when you want to switch suppliers.

I'd doubt that anyone can guess why you've been using more gas than you thought you were, there are loads of reasons that we could all have a stab at, but it's really down to you to keep an eye on it, not just when the bill comes in coz by then it's too late unless you correct it immediately
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
