I have seen lots of people using the tablet type computers. I have a lap top and am wondering whether to get one of these tablets. I don't know anything about them. What does a laptop do that a tablet can't? Are they quite reliable? Are you able to get them repaired? what GB should I go for? What are the cheaper versions like? What would I expect to pay? Can they be used like a Kindle?
Keep on trucking!

My question is, what would you do on 1 that you wouldnt use your laptop for ?
What does a laptop do that a tablet can't?
Tablet is more portable in terms of weight, size etc
Laptop has a keyboard for typing, keyboartd on the Tablet is on screen.
Are they quite reliable?
Yes, ive had my Nexus tablet since xmas, brother has had an ipad for a while now and has been fine.
Are you able to get them repaired?
Yes you can
what GB should I go for?
Depends which 1 you go for eg the Samsung Tab2 despite it only having say 16gb storage you can add extra with a micro sd card say a 32 GB and have 48GB storage.
What are the cheaper versions like?
Define cheaper, less than £100, there are threads on here about a particular brand of tablet thats cheap and does the job (may not be as fast as say the google nexus say)
What would I expect to pay?
Its personal prefence, John lewis had the Samsung Tab2 7inch for £150, you get the 2 year warranty with it.
Can they be used like a Kindle?
Yes they can, you download the Amazon Kindle app and download books, google have they're own version called Google Play books but only reads books bought from the Play Store.0 -

Laptop can have a larger screen.
Laptops will run Windows software, whereas tablets are limited to either Apple-type or Android-type applications.
Laptops are easier to print from.
Are they quite reliable? Are you able to get them repaired?
Yes, and they're unlikely to need repair unless you abuse or accidentally damage them.
what GB should I go for?
Depends on what you want to store on it.

No idea about versions other than iPads. Yes, you can get book-reading apps to allow tablets to work like Kindles.0 -
certainly get e-books on all the major brands .
Their are a number of apps like kindle that are used to read different formats / librarys .
Not 100% sure as to that for Ipad though .
Most of the better brands come with GPS and navigation .
Likewise Internet Email Camera Office Applications
MP3 Video TV .
Keyboard usually fine on screen and you can often buy a stand alone keyboard .
SD Micro card slot is an advantage to increase storage .
NO dvd player
Most just transfer dvd to sd card .
An awfully lot of very useful free Android apps and a Galaxy Note 10.1 have replaced my laptop .
seven inch pocket portable 10 inch portable but wont fit in a pocket .
Heavy grunt work office work then its a laptop really .

I am grateful for all your replies. I have just been pointed in the direction of getting a Kindle Fire as it might be a cheaper option. Do any of you know anything about them?Keep on trucking!0

Tablet computers are easy for quick browsing, watching movies and playing games (if that's your thing).
They are not so good for documentation, programming, storing files, processing intensive data.
As far as options go, there is the iPad and the rest.
The downside is that the iPad isn't cheap.0 -

I only know that the Kindle can read books and with not owning 1 myself im not sure if it can browse the internet.0 -
What does a laptop do that a tablet can't?
Depends on the size of both. High end laptops are quite powerful, run lots of applciations, high level games graphics etc. Basic tablets are just about useful for internet, storing pics and music. You then go up and down the scale for both. You can connect keyboard, mouse and screen to some tablets to use it more comfortably.
Are they quite reliable?
If you pay for an iPad - £3-400 then you'd expect it to last. Pay £30 for a nook simple touch and beyond a year and you're lucky. Also depends what you do with it.
Are you able to get them repaired?
If in warranty then worth it. If out and you only paid £50-£100 then debatable on the cost benefit of repair.
what GB should I go for?
A stored movie (legal) would take up half to one GB. Your music and pictures collection could be 5GB and then add some for apps and other docs - do the maths.
What are the cheaper versions like? What would I expect to pay?
You can find android tablets for as little as £50. Then it is a trade off on resolution, connection (WIFI, bluetooth, 3G) storage - again its take your pick. You probably get what you pay for - but there can be deals around so look.
Can they be used like a Kindle?
You are comparing 'eBooks' with Tablets. I can run barnes and noble, KOBO etc on my tablet and read ebooks like the kindle. However don't expect 'eInk' technology like you get on kindle, touch etc on all tablets.0
