Hi all.
I have been told in the past that there isn't much risk (if any) passing my account number and sort code on to people for them to pay me for certain items.
I would like to clarify this. I have run a forum for a few years now and normally take payments through paypal but its surprising how many people just can't use paypal and the fact paypal charge a fee.
I would like to give the option to members to pay for membership and/or our items we have for sale by paying via a bank transfer to the account I use for the site.
Is it safe enough for me to post my bank account number and sort code on my forum and on the membership application forms?
Thanks in advance
Tony

Generally it's safe, but it has bitten some people in the past.
Note that some people will be wary of bank transfers due to the fact that there's no way of getting any charge-back, especially if they mis-key the numbers and the money ends up in someone elses account - banks are notoriously reluctant to fix such problems when they happen.Conjugating the verb 'to be":

Use a savings account that's not enabled for direct debit.0

If people don't know how to, or are frightened of using payapl, perhaps you should give an option to pay by cheque or postal order

This. Direct debit is the only danger I can think of, so removing that threat leaves you without risk.0 -
I never realized you could send them to savings accounts. I might have to set one up and do it that way. Thanks

I am thinking about accepting cheque's and postal orders but will be honest I have no idea how they work? Do I pay them into my bank just like a cheque or do I have to go to a post office?
Also I know there are fee's with them but do I pay the fee when cashing it in or does the payee pay the fee on top of what they pay me i.e. they are paying me £10 so £10 on the postal order for me and the fee they pay separately?0 -
Fees for postal orders are paid by the buyer at the time of purchase, the recipient receives the full amount. You'd usually clear them as you would a cheque, although uncrossed postal orders could be cashed at post offices in the past, though I can't say whether that still applies0

As long as I can put into the bank account that is all that matter to me.
Thanks you all for your help. You have cleared allot up for me.
Now to make a non direct debit saving account
