the dryer broke on it just out of warranty and was left with a washing machine
That's fair enough, but it's not because dryer/washers are inherently bad or worse than their separate counterparts. A separate dryer also can easily break early on. You just have to choose appliances that are highly rated and of better brands.

Washer Dryers have a lot of technology crammed into the machine so there is a bit more to go wrong.

Miele who make the best machines in the business will warrant their washers for 10 years and dryers for 5 years but their washer-dryers for only 2 years and there has to be a reason for that.

In general you wont go wrong with any laundry appliances made by Miele but Siemens/Bosch and AEG rate well in the second tier appliances down from Miele.

Buy combined washer-dryers with the full knowledge that there is fundamentally more to go wrong. Split the drying loads otherwise you will find that you are running the appliances for hours on end without getting any drying done. In the process you cause wear to both the machine and the laundry.

People's experiences differ. In this 'ere house there resides an Indesit washer/dryer beastie that's been here and used regularly (too much from an electricity consumption pov one might suggest) and hasn't given one solitary microseconds trouble in the best part of 10 years.

There - now I've done it - expect it to break down later this afternoon. :D

My point remains valid though-you'll still need two dryer loads for every full wash load. Adding both time and money.

Not true. Mine is 9kg wash and 7kg dry. I have your a lot of clothes that can't be tumble dried, so either do a smaller wash + dry of just those that can be or bigger wash, take out the non-tumble dry stuff and dry the rest. It's really no biggie!

My independent washers and dryers have lasted much longer. I may have been unlucky, but it does tend to put you off. Again it's about personal choice. I now have the dryer in my bedroom cupboard (big enough for a single bed) as there's no room for it in the kitchen

We have an Indesit one, I'm not sure how old it is as my wife bought it with her when we moved in together. I think we're supposed to dry a slightly smaller load than we wash, but we never bother and it obviously hasn't caused any problems as its still running well.
  • Thanks for all the comments and recommendations.

I'll look at that Which best buy one I think. With appliances, I agree it tends to be random - you either get a good machine or a bad one. So far (fingers crossed) I've always been lucky with mine.

I am moving to a small flat and will have to buy either way, either a washer/drier that will fit in the kitchen, or separates and have washer in kitchen and try to squeeze drier in bedroom. Will need a drier ideally as it's a flat, no balcony or outdoor space, and I lived like that in the past with no drier and airing racks over the bath and everywhere all the time - never again. There's only me so won't get loads of use and I don't mind the smaller dry load, you just do it in two halves. If I had space I'd definitely get separate ones.

    thanks again,

You could buy a small counter-top dryer?
