Earphones!

Options
I struggle with earphone to fit comfortably but found success with JVC Air Fits. Now one of them has gone silent, are they repairable in any way or do I have to resort to buying another pair of earphones as before I found success with these i must have gone through 10 pairs easily. Gutted as all the others have been fairly cheap ones and decided to pay a bit more for a pair that if suitable would last (have only had them about 6 months)

It depends where the problem is. If it's in the 3.5mm stereo jack plug, if you're adept with a soldering iron, you could try replacing that. If it's in the earbud itself, then as neilwoods says, you've no realistic chance of repairing them.

The difficulty is finding where the problem lies.
  • Just thought I'd share!

I have horrendous trouble finding earphones that fit my ears. They just don't. I'm not sure what is wrong with the shape of my ear canals that mean its an impossible task to keep ear buds in (which the entire rest of the world wears).

But anyway, that was until I found the Motorola S10. Bluetooth, syncs perfectly with my iphone and has controls built in to change tracks/volume etc. Good quality, and they only bloody stay in my ears EVEN WHILE RUNNING! Amazing. I've had them well over a year and had zero trouble.

I have Etymotic earplugs, and they can get gunged up and need cleaning. The sound went completely dead in one ear and I thought dammit, but a quick clean and they were back to normal.

    (Great sound too!)
  • thanks guys, will look at the alternatives you have said. I am pretty gutted cos as you guys have said I too have trouble getting them to fit (at least you are not on your own folks). I am so fed up of buying ones only to find they aren't right and thought with these I had cracked it, shame they didn't last 5 mins and I wouldn't mind but I don't use them that often so in all fairness they have not lasted long at all!!!

If both sides have gone, it's more likely to be the plug. As someone Graystreet says, soldering a 3.5mm jack isn't impossible, although (having done it recently to repair a rather lovely pair of Shure in-ear monitors) it can be a lot more fiddly than it ought to be.
  • No just one ear, fine the other day and now not!! I know earphones can go quickly but like I said I don't use them that often, even keep them in a little box stop them getting tangled!

I think most of the noise-isolating earphones come with different sized tips. The large ones I got with my Shure earphones fit me fine. :-)

I bought my son some kids-sized ones (again Etymotics, based on my experiences with my own ones) - might be worth checking them out.
