OS ways of keeping paddling pool clean

Options
Having taken 5 hours to fill our new paddling pool (3m x 1.8m), I don't want to be doing that every couple of days so is there any way I can keep the water clean/hygienic?

Would adding vinegar to the water help? I don't really want to buy pool chemicals as they are expensive and my daughter has sensitive skin.

Any advice welcome :)

I put a glug of super cheap bleach in ours.. and use a sieve to fish out the bits of grass that get in.

I take it as its that big it has some kind of filter pump? If it's an intex pool you can buy a chlorine generator which converts a saltwater pool (cheap table salt) into a very skin friendly pool for those with sensitive skin. It's as close to tears as you can get and my skin was very soft whenever I've been in ours. I wouldn't even consider adding anything other than recommended pool chemicals as you can't put a price on safety and definitely not household bleach. The unit isn't cheap but your water will only stay clear in this heat for about 10 days before algae starts growing without water treatment. Alternatively you can buy multi function chlorine tablets (on eBay) which you place in a floater and they will keep your pool clean. If you don't use the correct chemicals/saltwater system then before you know it your water will be green and you'll have to refill and clean out your pool and as you say it takes 5 hours to fill then that's going to be less cost effective than chemicals. The chlorine levels needed to keep a domestic pool clean are nowhere near as strong as your local pool and you can barely smell it at all so your child shouldn't have any problems. Hope that helps but if I can help, just shout

No, it doesn't have a pump. I like the sound of using salt for a skin friendly treatment. Is it only for certain pools or could I even just add a load of salt to the water?

Hi I'm afraid you can't just add salt to the water for it to work. The saltwater has to be passed through two electrodes to convert it to chlorine and as you don't have a pump you won't be able to use this system. I'd suggest a floating chlorine dispenser with multi function tablets in as the best option. These are available on eBay and are quite reasonable and certainly cheaper than replacing the water every 10 days especially if you're on a water metre

I reckon replacing the water will actually be cheaper than tablets. Check your unit price on your water company's website (or a bill) and do 1.8x3xheight of water to work out how much water you'd use in cubic metres.

I'd use the old pool water to water the plants and lawn (could top up your water butt too if you can't use it all in one go).
