Short term contents insurance

Our current contents insurance runs out on the 21st July. We have just exchanged contracts on a property (last week) and are due to complete on the first week of August. We were given the advice of getting home insurance from the date of exchange and since I was at it I have arranged to get joint contents and buildings at the new house which is now in place.

The problem is, at our current rented property we won't be covered for contents from 21st July for 2 weeks until we move. I had been under the impression our current provider would be able to extend our cover for a short period, but they won't do this.

Does anyone know of a company who would provide 2 weeks contents insurance. We are willing to pay for a month if we need to. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Will your new insurer cover your old address on a temporary basis?

Your new company is better placed to cover you until you complete the move - ask them!

What about taking out a new policy and cancelling? Is it true you can cancel within 14 days no questions asked? That would pretty much cover us. I know I won't get all the money back, but hopefully will get the amount minus some pro rata for the days we had the policy. Does that sound reasonable or is it a bit risky?

First ask you new company if they will cover the contents during the moving period.

If not then you can take out a policy for the 2 weeks uninsured.

You will normally have a 14 day cooling off period but as you know you will be charged for the time on risk and possibly an admin fee - this will vary by insurer
