RAC - Not able to cancel membership

Hi All,
I joined the RAC last June. I set payment up via DD and went on my way!
Fast forward to now and, scrolling through my bank statement, I realised they'd taken this years charge. This DD came out of my account 15 days ago. I actually sold my car 2 weeks ago but never got around to sorting out the admin due to my wife being ill in hospital.
According to their T's and C's, you have 14 days to cancel. So I thought I'd phone up and ask what they could do for me.
I was told that they offer no refund at all if you cancel after the 14 day cooling off period?! So I have paid £109 for approx 3 days breakdown cover and am being penalised for switching to a train commute.
I was offered I could switch the cover to someone elses name, but that was it. Would they still have enforced the charge if I'd been paying monthly as opposed to all up front?!

Can this really be true?!

Thanks to anyone in the know!

R

I'm afraid so. Terrible approach to customer service but they won't budge.

I would find someone (i.e. anyone with an old Renault) and transfer the membership to them and tell them to call the RAC whenever they want - flat tyre, washer fluid low, strange noise coming from the gearbox, etc.

Even if you paid monthly it's a credit agreement to spread the cost of an annual membership, they'd still come after you if you cancelled the DD.

You should have cancelled the autorenew in May when you got the letter in.
I've no idea the ins and outs or legalities of it all, but I've been with them 3 years and every year I've had the notice a month before.

Really good. It should read "someone with an old renault thats got plenty of time on their hands to wait around for the recovery service to arrive".

Last year i had to chase them for my renewal. Nothing arrived. The supposed replacement also never arrived.

After another call it finally came through.
