Used Xbox 360 fault

Hope you informed people can just help clarify my position for me.
In November 2012 i bought a used Xbox 360 from Gamestation through their online website as a present for my 9 year old son.
In about March it started developing an E74 fault that got progressively worse, i tried in vain to find the receipt but could not find it anywhere.
In June i resorted to sending it to Microsoft's Xbox repair service which i paid for, unfortunately they sent the Xbox back unrepaired with a letter saying 'an inspection of the Xbox console revealed evidence of internal tampering' and gave me a refund.
After taking it to another repair shop locally to see if they could repair they said they could not either.
Ironically, after a concerted effort on mine and my wife's part we finally managed to find the invoice receipt from Gamestation for the console today so my question is, do i have grounds for a repair/replace under the sale of goods act for a console that was clearly not fit for purpose and potentially sold to me in a defective or tampered state (as per the claim from Microsoft). I bought the console in good faith and feel that the product in question is not of an expected usable quality.
Thanks for you time..

Are Gamestation still in existence?0
-
Gamestation was a subsidiary of Game which still operates.
The Invoice also states 'Game Retail Ltd, trading as gamestation.co.uk'0 -
You need to prove now that you didnt do the internal tampering, expect a no for this one.0

You are over 6 months so it will be incumbent on you to prove it was faulty prior to purchase. Which I think is remote.0

I also have an Xbox 360 of my own and a PS3 and neither have had any tampering or modifications to them at all, would this not set a precedent?0

From GAME's website..."For starters, we only accept trade-ins of an acceptable quality, and both games and consoles are meticulously checked and made good as new in our reclamation centre before being re-sold. Plus, all our preowned products come with a 12 Month Quality Guarantee and, as with our new products, are also covered under GAME's 28 Day Returns Guarantee."0
