Hi, i have just purchased a new dvd recorder a Panasonic DMR-EZ45.
I want to buy some rw disks now but the disk speeds are confusing me, i've not got a techie head. What difference do the speeds make and which ones are the best please?

TIA Maggut

The higher speed the better as long as your recorder can take it, the faster the disk can spin and be burnt to, the faster it will write data to the disk or read it back.

Thank you, that makes sense now. How do i find out what the recorder is capable of taking?

A quick visit to the Panasonic web site will reveal that this unit can handle

    DVD-RAM
    -R
    -R (Dual Layer)
    -RW
    +R
    +R (Dual Layer)
    +RW

    Or you could always RTFM.;)

    Hi
When they quote the speeds of recordable DVD discs they are telling you how fast you could burn data to the disc in a computer DVD drive.
It's not relevant for standalone DVD recorders. They run at the same speed no matter what is the speed rating of the disc used.
The spec for that Panasonic DMR-EZ45 recorder says you can use DVD-R or DVD+R or DVD-RW or DVD+RW discs of all speeds up to and including 16X.
There's no benefit for you in using the higher speed discs though.

    Hello,

When you burn the disks, try not to burn it at the hiighest speed because this tend to generate read errors on older computer systems. I burn my DVDs at 4x and this has worked on all the system I have used them on. hope this is of some help to you.

    Hi,
Having recently purchased a Sony Handycam DVD video camera, I am just entering the world of recording onto DVD. After editing, I have transferred the data onto my first DVD (free sample) but I have to say it took forever. I seem to remember it transferred at 1x but of course I may be wrong. By the wy, the results are amazing. The DVD writer in the computer is brand new, bought specifically for this purpose. You will have gathered from my post, I am not a 'techie' so any help appreciated. Thanks - sally

But Panasonic DMR-EZ45 isn't a computer system.

If you want to use the machine like a VHS machine i.e. record watch then record over I'd suggest that you go for DVD-RAM.

They can be written and re-written far more often than DVD-RW.

I also believe that they are capable of much higher data transfer rates and this should allow you to "pause" live TV or start watch the beginning of a program whilst the machine is still recording the end.

    Cheers DonDon

True, but maybe at some point the OP may want to watch the disks on a computer or give a copy of a burned disk to someone else who might want to watch it on an older computer.
