Op, you say the bill of £55 was actual not estimated but was the start reading an actual one or was that estimated.
That could be the reason for your apparent 690 kwh usage.

I have just had a bill from E On, not estimated.
I have been charged £55 for the quarter. Gas is for the back boiler which is for the heating and hot water.
I know for a fact, that the hot water and heating haven't been on since April.
The pilot light will still be on but it's £55 acceptable? I emailed EOn and asked if there was a leak/fault and if I should turn the gas off at the mains to save me this £55. E on replied as such:

I am sorry that you are upset with the gas charges but I am unable to change this.

The bill has been calculated to what you have used and the corresponding standing charge. You can see the breakdown on the bill. The bill is also going from April to July. There is no fault with your meter and I dont think there is any need to turn it off.

I can see that you are dissatisfied so I have logged this on your account and if you would like to view our Complaints Handling Procedure please got to http://www.eonenergy.com/chp and you will see all of the information you will need. Should you want a paper copy of the procedure sent to you, please contact me and I will be happy to arrange for one to be sent out to you as soon as If you need to speak to us about anything else please email back or call, we're here to help.

Am I right in thinking there is a fault or mistake, £55 seems a horrific amount of money for what I see as essentially nothing. I don't want to be paying over £200 a year for nothing.

    Please somebody help or advise.

What do you think the pilot light burns???

    Hi kittycat204

Not much I can add to the excellent advice already on here. Thanks guys.

Just to confirm, we introduced Standing Charges across all our tariffs on 18 January 2013. This accounts for almost half of the bill and I can well understand your concern if comparing with a similar bill 12 months ago when most of our tariffs didn't have Standing Charges.

Also, as notbritishgas says, if the previous bill was estimated, the new bill could be a catch up.

Thank you for pointing put the standing charge thing. This is a cut and paste of that part of the bill.

    3 Apr 13 to 16 Jul 13 Gas 690 kilowatt hours (kWh) used at 4.128p each £28.48
Standing Charge 105 days at 26.09p per day £27.39
    Sub total of charges 3 Apr 13 to 16 Jul 13 £55.87

Does this make it more acceptable in your opionion? Thank you so much to all who have answered me. x

The standing charge is what it is & you will have to pay that.

If you are sure that the only thing powered since April is a pilot light & previous bills were based on accurate reads however then I would have thought that element seemed high.

You can ask for the meter to be tested if you wish - though if found correct you may be charged for it

I think you will find some suppliers charge you in advance and then refund you if it is accurate. This is to ensure they get paid for the job as the majority of times the meter is found to be accurate.
