Temporary car insurance

Options
Hi
Im buying a car this weekend for my teenager ready for when they turn 17 next month. But im looking to insure for me and hubby for 2 months and then when they get driving insure them on a new insurance. Whats the best insurer to do this with please as im getting stupid quotes. for a couple os months. Or would it be cheaper to insure for a year and then cancel after 2 monhs and then go with a teenager insurance.

Do you need to use the car while you are waiting for your teenager to turn 17? If not, then you could garage it and put it on sorn until then.
  • We would want to insure it either way as incase one steals it.

  • We would only want to insure us then when they turn 17 insure them as the main driver

try having a chat with a broker. someone might be able to insure him now and just upgrade when you let them know he is driving it.

it's the sort of request the comparison sites don't like because you either have to transfer ownership or lie when asked if you are the registered keeper etc.

I'd be hitting the phones or seeing if there is a good broker locally.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
  • Or would the best way be to insure me and the husband for 2 months and cancel the original insurance and start a new insurance for the teenager

Cant you just take the battery out and a couple of relays and keep it off the road?

Unless its something very expensive or desirable (unlikely) the cost of insuring another car, assuming without any NCD, will be expensive for a year and they will cancel it at short period rates and fees.

Failing that, have a word with local garages or recovery companies as they normally have big yards to see if you can store it there for cash, assuming its secure.

If the car's not being driven you can get laid up insurance (Google will find plenty of companies which offer it) which covers it against fire, theft etc, but not anything to do with road accidents. It's significantly cheaper than standard car insurance - especially with a young driver. It doesn't count as insurance for the purposes of the Road Traffic Act so the car still has to be kept off road and SORNed until you get proper insurance.
