OP I wouldn't get a doppler if I were you - as others have said, you could get to almost your 3rd trimester before a trained medical professional would check your baby's heartbeat, and they know what they're listening for. You don't.

Just enjoy being pregnant, relax and trust the professionals to take care of your baby :).

I picked up my son's heartbeat at 16 weeks. It took a bit of time to find it but there was no mistaking it once I had. It sounded like a freight train, so fast and strong. Gosh recalling that has brought a tear to my eye. At one point I could hear mine and his heartbeats at the same time, a very special moment. :)
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.
  • Dopplers are great, but even in trained hands they can be difficult with wriggly babies! Like others have said try and enjoy things as they are now :-). Congrats on your pregnancy!

I'm pregnant and heard the baby's heartbeat at 9 weeks and I'm far from skinny. It's my second baby though so I guess I knew what to listen for and where. Even my MW was sceptical but it was definitely the heartbeat. Much faster than mine. My doppler saved my sanity until I could feel baby move. I know some people think they can worry you more but I never had trouble finding heartbeat.

With our first it was at the 12 week scan, with the other it took a lot longer as my wife carried so much fluid she looked about 8 months pregnant before she was even 12 weeks pregnant, I'm not sure how far along she was, but it was after the 20 week scan.

18 weeks. It took 20 minutes. And that was the midwife. And a big baby. And I'm slim. Don't get a doppler. They just cause anxiety.

18 weeks too. Last week, and the poor midwife (who'd come in on her day off to see me - long story) couldn't pick up one heartbeat at a time, they were so close together she was getting both at once, and the doppler was registering 260bpm! It took her 10 minutes to even get that as well.

The thing with a doppler is that they only tell you for the time you are listening that the baby is ok.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
