Help With Used Car / Warranty

Hi - I would be grateful for any help & advice on the following!

We bought an X reg Astra approx 3 weeks ago.

Virtually immediately it developed an oil leak, the garage tried the "its not on the warranty" line but as we had done under 50 miles in the thing they agreed to fix it. Our main prob is the air con - the car was advertised as having air con, unfortuantly DH didnt check this on the test drive. It became apparant very quickly when we got the car home & were having a "play" (as you do!) that the air con was not working. The garage were contacted and we got the "its not covered on the warranty" line again. We would have no prob with this if it broke down weeks later as the warranty states but our argument is that the car was advertised with air con but it didnt work at the time of purchase.

The mechanic fixing the oil leak said dont worry I will sort but it has turned out to be the compressor - £300. The garage owner is not disputing the ad but asked that we pay £150 or he will be making a loss on the car (we paid £2700 by the way). Basically we think thats his problem. We do not have any more car money & feel bitter that we should pay anyway. We asked that they fix the oil leak & leave the air con while we "considered our options".

We want to write quoting our rights etc & requesting the air con is repaired at no cost to us.

Can some one advise us of our rights? Who is in the right? Where can I find
info on the sale of goods act / advertising etc. I am fully prepared to take this as far as need be - including small claims court as I deal with claims on a regular basis in my job.

Any info would be appreciated.

Jo
