Won't there be something in your rental agreement that requires you to surrender all keys to the property when you leave (including any that you've cut yourself)?

If not there should be ...

I have never seen that clause in a tenancy agreement.
Even if there was, it's unenforceable.
Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.

Although if, as eddddy suggests, it's for a communal entrance (we don't know because the OP hasn't said, but it could be right as it would be quite unusual to have a security key for a single property), then changing the lock would require a new key for every flat in the property, and would have to be done every time any property changed hands, which could get pretty expensive.

Although it could be a suited key system whereby the communal front door lock can be opened by any key within the suite, but each flat has its own lock.

Changing the flat lock for another within the same keying suite wouldn't affect the communal door or other flat's private doors.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • The key wasn't for the communal entrance it was for the entrance to our flat.

I've thought about the burglary scenario, and reckon that if the letting agency refuse to buy, I will take it back to the company who had it cut and get some form of receipt if possible.

Thanks for all the help ppl!
  • Sell them for £35? If it was me and I had been having some issues with them over other things I would offer them for £100 as this is what they would do to you. In fact I am surprised they didn’t offer to get them cut for an extortionate fee, but they probably think you will just give them to them when you leave and they’ve saved some money.

Although I am a homeowner (yes I added an extra lock when I moved in) I work and live away so whenever I move to somewhere new the first thing I do is get at least one complete set of keys cut, plus additional security fobs etc and then I use these rather than the originals just in case I happen to lose them. I generally do voluntarily surrender these keys at check out. At my most recent check in the Inventory clerk took a photo of each key so would be able to see if you handed in “new” keys.

I’ve got three locks on the front door, two of which are those BANHAM high security locks but operated by the same key. Apparently BANHAM are the only people who can cut these, and I think you need to be an approved person to get this done so for this flat I have a copy of the other key plus the associated key fob for the front door and when I have friends to stay I just remember to only lock the middle lock and they can use these.

I wouldn’t really be worried about the burglary aspect myself.
