Thanks very much for this so can you point me/give me SME advice as to how I might improve the criteria that a mortgage provider will see?
If you want to improve your mortgage prospects, don't do anything so crass as try to improve your so-called 'credit score'.

Different lenders have different criteria for different types of credit. So something which makes you a good prospect for sofa credit may actually harm your mortgage prospects. We don't know how Experian do their scoring, but it is a fair guess that their scoring is more like sofa credit scoring. Experian might do us all a favour by telling us their credit scoring method and another favour by having more types of credit score - sofa score, car score, mortgage score.

But I still wouldn't pay money for it. The things to do for good mortgage prospects include
    • staying out of your overdraft -at least most months if you must use it and coming out of it every month if you must go into it
    • no CCJs defaults or late payments (CCJ's are OK if you clear them within the month
    • Paying off your credit card in full or at least paying more than minimums
    • Not maxing your cards
    • Being on the electoral roll
    • Not having bad info on your record which is on there by mistake.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

Thanks, can I ask if I make an application for a mortgage and get refused does this leave a negative mark on my record?

When do you risk applying again?
