Ebay can only make people refund if they've taken paypal.

i agree, they can only really win a 'not as described' dispute with paypal if youdont described it as faulty, which OP says they have? if i was in the sellers shoes i would be happy for them to start a dispute.

I'm inclined to agree with here. There is no real suggestion as yet that buyer is actually asking for a fulll refund, it has been offered, but not specifically asked for. This is one example where I would possibly let it go to a paypal dispute as there is a very good chance that the seller will win a claim for 'item not as described'. Where anything is sold as used or damaged paypal tend, on balance, to favour the seller.

I would have been more happy to help if the buyer had not gone ahead and left feedback, but leaving feedback before resolving the issue is another of my pet hates.

  • It's not really gone to plan though

and how is that the fault of paypal as you seem to suggest? would a cheque payment stop a buyer from complaining?
if he'd taken a cheque/postal order he could just tell the buyer not to be so silly...

and what happened to the dave brooker who has suggested many times that he'd rather pay by cheque himself? you are now condradicting yourself by suggesting the buyer in this case would have no comeback with the OP simply if he'd paid by cheque!

    HYPOCRITE!!!

The problem is that unrealistic and difficult buyers can make life hard for sellers who use paypal by starting disputes.

I prefer to pay by cash and collect if that's a realistic option, then at least you get to see what you are buying.

Of course he has comeback if he really feels strongly about the condition of the item and has paid by cheque.

Calm down dear, it's only an internet forum...

  • Thank you all so much. Your replies have given me the confidence to deal with this buyer. As the return postage costs would wipe out all but £1 of the potential refund I'm fairly sure he knows it's not worth pursueing that route but he is still complaining (his comments about the details of the auction have been confused, inaccurate and inconsistent) and threatening to leave bad feedback. I guess I can only wait and see. Is there a time limit for leaving feedback or starting a paypal dispute?

The buyer has 45 days to start a paypal dispute, and can leave feedback easily up to 90 days after auction end, and also past that until the item is removed from the live server.
