Backdated Tax Credits Help

Hi all,

Sorry if this is another silly question.

Me and my wife declared a total of 24,000 for the year 2011/2012 when applying for CTC in July 2012 due to the birth of our son.

We did not realise that payments were made based on previous years estimate, since my wife was not working after having our baby I called again in December to advise that our total income for year 2012/2013 was only going to be around 16500. They changed our award to reflect this.

The new award notice sent in December 2012 states that there is a potential payment of 1000.00 however this cannot be calculated accurately until final income details are received for year 2012-2013.

I just had to call the tax credits line to provide some further info, when going through the menu's it states that a change in circumstances can only be backdated by one month.

My question is therefore this, given I did not report the change in circumstances until December 2012 will we be due any backpayment going back to July 2012? Is this what the potential payment refers to?

Thanks for any assistance.

Income changes are not changes of circumstances for the purposes of the 1 month time limit.

You should have just completed your renewal forms and given HMRC your actual 12/13 income and they will/or may have already finalised your award which will confirm if there is any money owed.
