OP, I suggest you ring all of the rescue centres in the local area, and further afield, and ask to go on their waiting lists. I work for a rescue and whilst you would initially be told we were full (which we always are), once we've rehomed some cats we take some more in off the waiting list, so it is worth getting on the lists.

You have a year to find them a decent home if you're not taking them with you.

    If you're considering Calgary.....

Good grief what planet are they living on? Average life of a cat with access to the outside is 2-5 years. Complete bunkum.

A family member has asked if she can have them, we wouldn't have dreamed of asking her as she already has two elderly cats and didn't want to impose. Rehoming was the only option in the end for us. I couldn't have put them through the flight etc after reading some of the posts on here. I didn't realise we wouldn't be able to let them outside.
Thank you everyone for your replies, I hope this posts helps other people in the same situation.

There are adjustments that can be made to make travel easier. Enquire with different airlines and see what they can offer your kitties.
