Please help...screwed over by ex fiancee

Please can someone help my daughters as been working in Asia for last two years and as saved up to go to university.

She checked her credit rating and was going to apply for a government funded loan scheme to help with the top up fees of £5000 and found that her ex-boyfriend/fianc!e had late payments/defaulted on a mobile phone contract, that was taken out in my daughters name when they were together, he then without her knowledge upgraded it after they had split and that was when he stopped paying and then defaulted on it .....they were renting a room from one of his friends at the time so she did not know anything about any of this.
She has not had much joy from the mobile phone company, although they did say it was 'fraud' as he'd upgraded the contract without my daughters knowledge, it was a while after they had split and at that time she was preparing to leave to work abroad and the ex has more or less said to her that it's not his problem.
I think he's still bitter.
Please can anyone help as it may mean that she can't go to uni to do her masters.....I'm not in a position to help, I've brought her up on my own and she's worked hard to get to where she is....Im gutted and don't know what to do to help. Thanks for reading this.

If the mobile phone company said it was fraud then can she report it to police and get a crime number?

If its a government funded loan will they still check her credit rating?
  • Unfortunately it would be proving fraud it could be her word against his and the phone company said it could take months and months, in the mean time she is supposed to be starting at uni in September.

Apparently they do check their credit rating as she's spoke to someone from that department, it's a loan that she would be applying for..........She's worked so hard to pay of her overdraft from when she was doing her degree.

    Thanks for your help x

If this means it is "technically" her phone and phone number. I would firstly be asking for a new phone number or reporting my phone as stolen.

I would be determined to close the account even if at cost, in case it gets any worse. I would also do my best to ensure the very phone number is no longer available. A lot of people rely on keeping an existing number as losing it can cause undue problems when it comes to contacts.

I hope she sorts this issue out and gets on with her life at Uni. Wish her luck. ;)

  • Hello and thanks for your reply.
The problem is that it is over three years ago and she foolishly allowed him to use her name (he could not get a phone in his name something to do with his credit rating) and they split up just after this..... she just assumed that he was paying for the phone each month, as she had no further contact with him, the phone company said that he then upgraded to a new phone, new number etc still using her name which she knew nothing about. This was about the same time that she was going to live in China, 2 years ago. It was then that he started paying the bill late and then just stopped paying all together, so that is why there is a default in her name.

The loan that she had hoped to get was to pay the extra university fees for the course that she wanted to do, which as to be paid upfront.

Hope that explains it a bit better.......

I really feel like going on face book and writing on his page what a ....... he is but that is not my daughters way and she would be really angry with me.
It just seems really unfair that she's worked hard the last 2 years in China to be able to save a bit of money to support herself so that she could do her Master's and pay her overdraft off from when she was studying for her degree and he can ruin it for her so easily.

    Any other suggestions please?????

Would it be possible to put a notice of correction on the credit file to say that the amount is under dispute? I don't know much about it or the possible ramifications but it might be worth at least looking into.
