Ford Mondeo - burning oil

you what? Oil expands when hot?
Not by any measurable amount it doesn't.
What you do need to be wary of is that the engine has had enough time for all the oil to drain back into the sump, or else it will read low. that's why I generally leave it 10 mins of so before checking. If you stop, jump out, and pop the bonnet, you won't get a reliable reading.0 -

So every mechanic, and every diy motoring magazine for the last 50 years has been wrong in advising to check the oil when the engine is hot! So on the word of Weird Nev, millions have been doing it wrong!"There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

That has absolutely nothing to do with the oil expanding - you check it hot because the oil is thinner and will have worked it's way back to the sump due to this.
If you've started it for 2 minutes and your engine is still cold, the oil will be distributed around the engine and will take time to flow back to the sump as it'll be thick.0
