Child Tax Credits are still based on income even if you don't get Working Tax Credits. You can get Child Tax Credits if you earn up to £58,000 a year, slightly more if you have a child under 1.

Child benefit is what everyone with a child gets regardless of income - child tax credits are based on your income as Mrs B states.

When you apply for tax credits you apply for both WTC and CTC. You give them all your details and they work out what elements of Working Tax credit and Child tax credit you are eligible for. They then taper those elements away according to your household income.

So you may be eligible for

WTC - basic, 2nd adult, 30 hours elements and

CTC - baby, child and family elements

but by the time your income has been taken into consideration your WTC has been tapered away totally leaving you receiving only some of the CTC.

That's why they need you to confirm your income details at the end of the tax year.
