Golden rule: don't assume everyone else is chasing things for you.
Be on the ball every day and don't be afraid to pick up the phone to all relevant parties every day to keep things moving.
Be assertive but not rude - ensure everyone knows what the desired outcome is with dates etc.
Make sure you find out exactly what needs to happen and when for that to happen, and who is responsible. Find out if there is anything you can do or the EA can do to keep things moving.
Then keep on it every day.

    .

Couldn't agree with this more. Chase, phone, pester - you're paying them so you have every right to know the current position.

So glad I spoke to the EA, our solicitor never even told the vendor's solicitor that we were on a deadline and couldn't complete between August 9th and September 15th. Banging my head on desk.
