How long does it take for Royal Mail to compensate for lost items...?

Hi everyone
After ten years of ebaying I had never had a parcel lost until recently when I had two in the space of a week...
The first one was with myhermes and has been processed and they have accepted the lost parcel claim and the money has been refunded. Total time from posting lost parcel claim form to receiving refund was 30 days.
The second one was with Royal Mail. I sent off all the details they asked for and received a letter saying they would contact me once a decision had been made. That was 10 weeks ago!!! Does it normally take this long? Also, I have read somewhere that Royal Mail don't refund postage costs even if they accept they lost the parcel - surely this can't be true?!

They do refund postage costs along with the value of the item.
Typically takes about 4 weeks - did you make a copy of your claim?0 -

No I stupidly didn't keep a copy but I could reprint the necessary proof from ebay if required although obviously I don't have a copy of the proof of postage as I sent it to them already. Lesson learnt...Thanks, I will contact them again...0 -
You do get a confirmation letter that they received your claim normally within a couple of weeks.Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise. Your statutory rights are not affected.0

I would phone up, it might be that the buyer didn't get back to them. I've had that happen and they don't do anything unless you chase it up.No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!
Thanks to everyone who posts competitions. You are the stars of the board :T:j:T0 -

My Son has has quite a few people, ( 5 in the past 2 weeks) saying that they have not received there parcels, on checking the tracking numbers, the site is saying that they still have the item, it is being processed. Isn't this enough proof that the parcel has not been delivered, or do they still contact the buyer.0

The problem with signed for is that RM know the message rarely updates and anecdotally are more likely to give the sender problems than with normal mail.
