Gym closing but paid 1 year in advance

Advice for a friend-

Their gym will be closing in 2 months (the land has been bought by a developer), however they have paid for 1 years membership in advance. They are currently in month 2 of their membership and paid with a Visa debit card. Do they have any rights as to reclaiming any of the money back for the remaining months they won't be able to use through no fault of their own?

Also the gym is still signing people up without telling them that they will be closing in a few months- surely this is wrong?

If they're signing up people on contracts beyond that which they can offer a service then, yes, I think that's wrong. Contact Trading Standards. Re. the other more pressing issue - has your friend contacted the gym and asked for a refund?
