So sorry to hear of your loss. I am not sure what your situation is but by law all funeral directors must offer as an option a 'basic' funeral

Really? I had never heard of this and the link you provide doesn't mention it

Can you give a reference for this "law" please.

scotsbob - it alludes to something here, although I don't know if that is law, joolzred will have to clarify:

However, Which? mystery-shoppers were only offered a simple funeral on half of their visits although this option should have been offered by all 18 funeral homes that were members of a trade organisation.

As far as I know, the only law regarding funerals is the responsibility that councils have to provide a basic cremation when no-one else is able/willing to.

Thank you for all the responses

It is difficult to decide anything at a time like this, especially when i do not know what my mother wanted.

Especially difficult with no family to help.

I have waited a few days to gather my thoughts before deciding on the funeral director and arrangements.

That is a code of practice it is not statute law

I am aware of that. My post was to let people reading this topic realise that, not for the first time, joolzred is providing incorrect information.

I was agreeing with you. I thought I'd multi-linked to jool's post but it didn't show up.

Many apologies, I am sorry but I made a mistake: the main two trade associations have a code of conduct that members must provide a 'simple' low cost funeral option to all people using their services.

    from http://www.nafd.org.uk :

If you choose a funeral firm that is a member of the National Association of Funeral directors, it is bound to abide by a Code of Practice which ensures that the firm treats its clients and the public fairly. Member firms are required to have price lists available showing the cost of the services they provide. The Code also requires them to provide a simple fixed price funeral – The Simple Funeral Service - which should be offered to you during the course of the funeral arrangement.

Mods: I am aware that this secondary discussion is removing the focus from the OP's posting and I do not wish to upset her/him so would it be possible to remove/edit our posts accordingly?

I have never knowingly wished to mislead people with incorrect information, I hope that is realised, and when I make a mistake I will admit to it. However why is the tone of your post so accusing?

......and the "law" of market forces means it is likely to be at a date and time when most people are not able/willing to attend.

I think that's very likely. The council probably has an arrangement with the crematorium to pay less as long as they use the less popular time slots.

Times like these are stressful enough - but still waiting for the post-mortem to take place, seems there is a backlog.
I am assuming this is common or i'm i wrong in that regard.
