Repair or replacement imac ?

Hi
I am posting this for my brother as his imac is broken,
he bought a imac from currys for £1000 2 months ago and last week it started turning its self off, and to day it will not power up at all.
his wife contacted currys and she was told it would have to be sent off for repair, that's what they do he told her.
but the problem is he needs his computer for his business for quotes invoices and wages etc.
what he wants to know is can he get a replacement or does he have to shut his business down till its fixed, if he can get a simple swop, what's rights are law does he need to remind them of ?

thanks Frank D

It is up to the retailer as to whether they wish to repair, refund or exchange. I'm sure he does not need to shut the business down - if he is unable to use another computer, all libraries now offer internet/ computer access.

If he expects a business service, he needs to pay for it. In this case he purchased as a consumer.

What Jacques Chirac says is right.

After a reasonable period of time (usually a month or less) the consumer looses the ability to reject the machine (if faulty) for a replacement/refund. After this time it is essentially the retailers choice to either repair/replace/refund, you may request a option but the retailer can refuse on grounds of costs (and since a iMac repair costs the retailer nothing vs reselling a refurbished one at a discount of £200-£400 I'd say that's a good enough reason).

Your options are to either take it to a Currys/PcWorld store for them to arrange, or take it to a AASP https://locate.apple.com/uk/en/ (because it's a apple it doesn't matter where it's purchased from, so long as the serial number is showing a valid service on apples website you can take it into a AASP to get fixed) and they will repair it quicker than taking it into PcWorld/Currys as it can be done within a few days at the AASP, while PcWorld/Currys will take about 7 days.

And while the SoGA does state any remedy must be done within a reasonable timeframe and without significant inconvenience, you would find it hard pressed to arguing your case to a judge if you use the business reason. Business SLA and contingency plans should be thought of before issues arise.

Assuming it's a new Imac, take it to Apple!

Apple, will know how to fix the machine a bit better than Currys will (no offence to the currys guys, but Apple's customer support is a lot better)
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!

And if they can't repair it they may swap it right out in an apple store, you never know your luck. You need to book in online for that though.

It doesn't matter that he's a business, it will have been sold as a consumer product and his rights reflect that. The average consumer can go without for a few days, as he will have to if Currys repair it.

Next time he needs to buy it from a business-orientated supplier, so this doesn't happen again.
