    Welcome to the forum.

Ring up NPower with your meter readings when you moved in if you have them.

If not, date when you moved in and current meter readings.

You need to do the same with your water company with meter readings if on a meter. If no meter just give date when you moved in.

You just need to ring Npower and explain your situation they will sort everything out for you, have the meter reading you took when you moved in to hand as well. You will then be registered as an Npower customer, you can then either remain with Npower, or you can then switch to another supplier.

    Do you:
    a) Call your energy provider?
    b) Call your dentist?
    c) Visit your local greengrocer?

Harsh. The energy market is so complicated and OP is doing this for the first time, so it's a fair question.
  • thank you i have sorted out the water that was simple, my problem lies with getting in contact with Npower. Every number i have tried to ring asks for a account number

That seems strange, it is very common for new occupants to have no idea of the account number.

Are you sure the property is with NPower?

It would also appear that the previous occupant has not informed the Utility company they were leaving. Had they done so, there would have been a letter sent addressed to 'The Occupier'.

Get the meter serial number(MPAN) and they can enter that into their system.

we were told by the landlord that previous tenants were using Npower. If the previous tenants havent informed them will that affect me in any way?

If the previous tenants changed supplier - as they are entitled to do without informing landlord - then you are in a legally binding 'deemed contract' with that new supplier until you decide to change.

You don't need the old account number, or a new one yet. Say that you wish to register for a new account and give them the opening readings.
Once you've done that and an account is open, you are free to commence a switch if you wish, which will take 4-5 weeks.
PS: you are not 'changing the bill to your name', you are opening a new account. It doesn't matter if the outgoing tenants have notified nPower or not. You will be billed from your opening reads.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

You can call them on 0800 316 8558

Ignore the requests for an account number (as you don't yet have one) and you'll then be asked other questions to get you through to the appropriate department.

They'll initially ask you a couple of times for an account number but don't press any keys, just hold on.

    HTH :)
