Anyone have an idea of what Youtube considers a hit on a video?

Hi folks,

Just wondering does anyone have an idea of what Youtube considers a hit on a video.

I know that they don't publicise the criteria in case of missuse, but surely its not as stringent as one hit per ip address?

Thanks

Thanks for reply, that's what I mean, what do they consider to be a particular view or hit as I believe they are known?

I'd guess at something like a play of more than a certain percentage of the file per IP address per time period, none of which they publicise. That would block spam and page refreshes from misconnections but still register if you liked a video enough to rewatch it a few days later

    Hi martin

It's a very closely guarded secret - if you look around the net, you will see that lots of people have tried to 'reverse engineer' the criteria and algorithms.

I suspect the criteria evolve over time - both to make the view count more 'meaningful', and to block any loopholes/abuse that emerges.

It seems that as well as blocking loopholes when they find them, they will also retrospectively reduce view counts. See: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/29/fake-youtube-views-cut-google-audit_n_2380848.html
