Is this weird?

We had a fabulous wedding in a castle in Poland last year. My parents were generous enough to help with the costs, hence Mother always thought of it as her own.
Now our wedding anniversary is looming - this sunday - and being skint and pregnant we're not really in a position to celebrate, but will probably end up in a restaurant somewhere - although I keep joking at the rate we're organising it we're probably going to end up in McDs!
My parents however have gone off to Poland for three weeks and I have just learnt this morning that Mother is booking dinner at the castle for 15 people on sunday to celebrate our anniversary!
Which I find sweet and slightly weird. When I told hubby he sounded a bit angry. Is this just jealousy, because we can't be there or are my parents being a little bizzare?

Are you sure they're not planning to surprise you and fly you over? It does sound strange to me; if they liked the place so much, why tie it to your wedding anniversary when you're not even going to be there?0
-
They're looking for an excuse to celebrate. It's nice they want to celebrate on your behalf, although a little strange admittedly
Let them get on with it and focus on what you want to do...congrats by the way 0 -
it is odd - but I think they're just using it as an excuse... and maybe it's the best time they've had for a while and they're trying to recapture some of it. I think I'd feel a bit put out though especially at not being invited! I never quite understand why other people mark wedding anniversaries (well except the big ones obviously) we don't even send each other a card or anything (although we do go away for a night in a posh hotel but that's more an excuse to get away than anything).0

I agree with the others it is strange, but I doubt there are nasty reasons for it...Perhaps as someone else has said they are planning to take you both over there too, or perhaps they loved the place so much that they are using your anniversary as an excuse to go back.
Personally, I would be a little peeved if my parents did it and didnt invite/pay for us to come too, as it would feel a little like rubbing my face in the fact that I couldnt afford to do anything.
Are your parents the type to be a little insensitive? Or the type to arrange a surprise for you both?0 -
I think it's both sweet, and a little strange. Which mothers can be!
Um, not sure how I'd feel to be honest... confused I suppose. I'd ask her why, and probably wonder about the 15 guests as well...
The weird element aside, it is lovely that she is obviously so proud of you, and it must've been one heck of a day to have her so pleased a year on.0 -
Would you really want to spend your anniversary with your parents and their friends? I agree that it sounds a bit weird, but so long as it won't interfere with your celebrations then try to think of it as a coincidence that they are having this party instead of focussing on your anniversary connection.
If my parents wanted to celebrate my anniversary, then the far away the better as far as I'm concerned - as long as you are with your husband, then who cares what anyone else does?0 -
Let's work through this... Mother is over there on business and dad went with her to try sort out the house she's inherited. I call it sunbathing - it's a beach resort.
They always liked the castle anyway and have been there for dinners before.
There is absolutely no reason for them to invite these people over, as they consist of our wedding guests and some people who couldn't make it on the day. And if I was to drag people away (an hour and a half drive from where they all live) I would do it on a saturday evening, not sunday (10th, anniversary)
For months now Mother has been saying that we should go and have dinner there on our anniversary, and if pushed they might pay for me to go over. But not hubby ever since he admitted to her, under torture
, that we had debts. I've been joking that I'm all packed and waiting for the ticket to come through the post:p
Technically we are of course invited, but at £300 for the flights alone I think McDs it is. (hey, if only we hadn't signed up for the NCT classes! )
I didn't mind my parents going over and even inviting someone, but a whole party?
And lush walrus, they are deffo the insensitive types! Well, mother is, dad just floats along behind her
Hey, Mother was jealous that we had our engagement party over in Poland without her, maybe it's payback time.
I love my parents, maybe they'll get us a doggie bag...:wall:0 -
It definitely sounds to me as though your parents (Mum mostly from what you have said) want another chance in the spotlight and to feel as though she is 'making up' for the engagement party. Have any of 'their' guests contacted you to say they think it is weird, or are they all on board with this slightly bizarre event?
Bless them, parents are odd aren't they? My Mum can't come to my house without bringing a 'picnic', even if we are going out for food, and it sounds to me like your parents are just having a mad moment and trying to combine the pre-arrange trip with some anniversary celebrations and managing to make it the weirdest event ever! I hope there are pictuers...!0 -
parents are weird, please dont spend too much time trying to understand them!
the thing you want to worry about is... at what point do we turn into them
  :eek:0
