Gas Meter Question

Hoping somebody can answer this for me?

Last week I did my meter readings for the first time since January (I know, not very sensible). The gas was 6098, my estimate on the bill was 6209.

So I phoned them and they said to call back this week and they would generate a new bill. I did my readings again and the electricity has moved up, but the gas is still 6098.

What I guess I'm asking is do you think my meter is faulty, or am I really not using much gas and it takes a while for it to move onto the next number? I have the gas boiler on to heat the water for an hour a day.

Thank in advance, Sarah.

I have my boiler set to heat the water for 1 hour a day + gas hob and I use about 1.8 imperial units a week.
So I would have thought you would have seen some movement on the meter, has it got an extra digit, ie the tenths.
    That should move each day.
Are you an imperial or metric meter, if metric then it should move more quickly.

    Probably faulty.

I had this problem last year and it took me several months to notice that the gas meter was stuck. I noticed when changing tariffs and taking readings 2 weeks apart - as I'd switched the central heating on a week earlier I was fully expecting the gas to be much higher but it was the same.

My boiler's pilot light uses gas all the time, as does the hob and shower so even during the summer months I'm using a few units a week (although this is around 6x less than I use in winter).

NPower changed the meter a month or so later, and eventually produced a revised bill which was wrong, as they'd blindly annualised my gas usage and said I used x units per day. As the meter broke down sometime over the summer this was a gross overestimation (would have been fine if it was half winter/half summer usage, but it was 95% summer and 5% winter usage for the 6 months in question). Finally sorted it when they agreed to halve the bill and thus my annual gas consumption ended roughly the same as previous years after this amendment, which is fair enough.

Going forward I'm taking readings for gas and elec every month, and NPower are issuing new bills each month which is great as I can see if my DD is covering them (and building up a surplus ready for the forthcoming winter).

Put the boiler on, make sure it's actually fired up and check the meter to see if it's recording any consumption.

    Simples!

Thanks for all your replies. I checked last night and it was 6098.74 and this morning it was 6098.93 so I guess I'm just not using much gas at the moment. Happy days! :)
  • I found one like that last year where the tenths were going round but not clicking up the main digits. same reading for years and years. The occuplier, who had a big 4 bedroom gas centrally heated house stayed silent about it saying its British Gases meter and their fault entirely if their meter does nt register. I only noticed it when I heard a little click coming from the meter ( as the tenths were going round ) and he was more or less forced to come clean. He had nt paid much at all for many years and saved many thousands of pounds. The suppliers just assume he has another form of heating and never question the non moving gas reading. So having the tenths move round does nt mean its not stopped . This was an imperial meter
