It is so difficult. We wanted a name for DS that was unusual but not wierd & one that he would not have to spell out loud for the rest of his life! I have heard so many people asking either how do you pronounce or spell a name I feel so sorry for the child.
Don't forget to check the initials as well - also the surname followed by the first initial. I work with someone who got laughed at in school for being "Green P."

I had a friend with a cousin called Teresa Green :rotfl:

I wanted to have Elizabeth as a middle name for my daughter but it meant her initials would have spelt PEE :D

No offence but sometimes you hold the newborn baby in your arms and he looks exactly like a red messy wrinkly thing! I would have had NO idea what to call DS except 'baby' when he was born if we hadn't picked out names already.

    Here's my tips;
check each name off against your surname and make sure the initials dont' form a rude word. Ie if your surname begins with a T its probably best to avoid first name beginning with T and also any combination like Fred Andrew T (FAT)

Go for the FULL version of any name, so if you like Fred use Frederick or Alfred, why? because it gives your child more options in later life. They may want to be 'Al' when they get to college for example. I also have a personal preference for the full version as it somehow seems classier than giving your child a 'nickname' as an actual birth certificate name. (very very personal opinion there btw)

Check trends, I like names like Joshua and Jake but currently every other child in a council estate school is called Josh so that put me off.

If you want an unusual name make sure its something you can spell, otherwise your poor mite will have to spend their whole childhood apologising/explaining/ being bullied for their parents wish fulfillment. Better yet make any slightly unusual name a middle name.

We had boys and girls names all picked out, but here's the ones I couldn't use (due to surname combinations etc) for our lad.

    Thomas William (Tom)
    Joshua Alexander (Josh)
    Robert John (Rob)
    James Tobias (Jamie/ Toby)

My sons are Connor & Ellis :)

unusual enough to not be in a class full of children with the same name throiughout school, but not too unusual they will forever be spelling it out lol

I also like Elliot and Finlay for a boy

myself and hubby had awful trouble choosing as everything i liked he / or someone else in the family didnt !

    good luck deciding ! ;)

    Halia...

Do council estates have their own schools? Is that to make sure council estate children don't mix with nice, clean children who have ambitions other than learning how to hot wire a car maybe, and whose parents own their own houses?

Maybe when choosing your childrens names you should go with ones that are made up from more than one syllable, I mean surely parents from coucil estates are only capable of one syllable words so by opting for names such as William or Thomas rather than Josh or Jake you won't embarrass the poor child for the rest of their life?

:rotfl: I know of a Teresa Green! she married into that so not her parents fault but you are right you do have to be careful. I wanted to name my dd Victoria but her initials would have been VD so decided against it - in case you think I'm taking it to far, at college & in various workplaces I have needed to initial to sign for something so didnt want to put her through that
I THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I Know

  • I was convinced I was having a third boy, so the name I would have had would have been MAX, I love it.

Also, be careful to write the name clearly on the form...Earl, from "my name is Earl" was supposed to be called Carl, but his dad wrote it italic-like (carl) so it looked like earl...

My grandad went to register my aunty as 'Victoria' but he was drunk when he went to do it (this was the 1940s!). He forgot her name and registered her name as the month she was born, my Gran was not pleased, but May is a nicer name than say October so it's a good thing she was a spring baby!
  • if i was to have a boy it would be kail or gabrielle but i`ve got three girls so ..oh well, shut up now lol:beer: congrats anyway
    :iloveyou:
