Keeping nursery cool at night

Our 13 month old son had his worst night since he was very little last night. Was up about 4/5 times and we're guessing the hot weather is not helping.

Can't open his window as too noisy.

Thinking of getting a fan, not a desk fan as they are too noisy.

Currently thinking about a tower fan or mini tower fan.

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated.

  • What I have been doing in my daughters bedroom is leaving the roller blind down all day so no sun can get into the room, and it has been nice and cool in the evenings when it is bedtime - it really works as our bedroom has been roasting.

I echo this. Eventhough I come from a hot climate, it surprised me when I visited my mum years ago in Aussie that she kept all the doors, windows and curtains closed during the heat of the day, and then opened them all up in the cool of the night. The house was lovely and cool, eventhough it was 30+ outside.
  • In the summer months I tend to close the kids blinds a couple of hours before they go to bed - it is helpful if it is a "blackout" blind as this stops the sunshine coming in and warming up their rooms.

We all have fans which work to a degree... in the kids rooms I have the sort that sit on a table however if they get tipped/pushed over they automatically cut out and the blade stops turning.

Might be an idea just to pop him to bed in a bodysuit? - if you haven't already.

Good luck - bet you never thought you would be wishing away hot weather!

We have a black out blind and the room only gets the sun in the morning.

Little fella has progressed to short PJ's now - very grown up !!

Would definately echo keeping the curtains, doors, blinds shut during the day, it makes a big difference. When it has been really hot in the past I have on occasion put my kids to sleep in the travel cot in the coolest part of the house (our dining room!) I find fans are too noisy for my kids, they just don't fall asleep with them on. Depending on your budget, those portable air conditioners are supposed to be good. My friend has one as her house gets really hot. She puts it on in the room for half an hour before bedtime and it really cools it down. I've also heard of using a fine water spray (garden sort) and spraying a fine mist of water on bedding to keep babe cool. Haven't tried that myself but as long as you don't get the bedding wet, it could work I guess. May be worth a try. You could also give babe a quick wipe down with a cold flannel before bedtime and the moisture on the skin will keep babe cool to help him back off to sleep. HTH

Hi there....i've noticed over the past few days that my 6 month old son's room (south facing) is getting warmer as the weather heats up even tho i have installed a blackout roller blind and black out curtains. all very well as this keeps the sun out but the heat still gets in.
I have just bought some solar window film today (https://www.abodewindowfilms.co.uk) which blocks out the suns heat, UV rays etc etc. These have been proven to work on conservatories so i thought i'd give it a go. it only costs about £15 for one window so i thought it would be worth a shot as the 26 degree temps are coming this weekend!!

I remember last Summer and it being so hot in LO's room, 33 at one point with the blinds being down all day!
They advised on the news to freeze water in a large bottle(leaving gap at top for expansion), then put this in front of a fan at night for cooler air.

    Whats his bed/cot like??

I cannot praise the Coolmax from Mothercare enough - it is still waterproof (and fully sprung so really comfy), but the top layer draws moisture away and is washable as it comes away from the rest of the mattress.

DD2 had one of these and has never woken in the night, DD3 had a cheaper mattress covered in PVC and woke often as she would drip with sweat.

Downside is that its not cheap.
