As others have said the wear layer and the fit / quality are probably the most important things to consider. Recently floored the extension and went for the best quality I could affort at the cheapest price. Went with Quickstep Uniclic profiled 800 Long Plank. Each segment looks like one piece of wood with the long edges chamferred (opinions are divided if this is better / worse than a more seamless long join).

In the shops you are looking at between £25 - £27 per sq m. Bout it online for approx £15 per sq m (if memeory serves correct).

WRT joining of rooms you just need to buy different edge profiles. One of my joins is with vinyl (kitchen) and the other is with carpet (hallway). The hallway join is pretty much at the same level whilst there is a 8mm - 9mm drop to the kitchen.

The most important aspect to consider, other than the flooring itself, is in the underlay. If you are laying the flooring directly on concrete then you need a DPM, or one incorporated into your underlay; also need to consider if you want soundproofing qualities in the underlay (apparently this can annoy some people if the flooring is to noisy). I went for a 4mm underlay with soundproofing and DMP.
