Small apartment - what to do with trash until collection?

Hi there as you may have seen my other thread we are renting a small apartment that is off a busy road.

Now we just moved in so have a few bags of trash but as the weather has been very hot some of it is starting to rot. Collection is not until Thursday though. There is nowhere outside to put the garbage not even any bins.

Would it be okay to just put it out on the roadside now? It is just not hygienic to keep it indoors in our small flat until then but obviously the earliest we can put it out would normally be wednesday night.

Advice appreciated! X

I would say no it isn't alright to put it out now.

Could you not take it to your local tip?

have you asked any of the neighbours what they do, seems a bit odd that bins haven't been provided

It's on a busy road behind shops so no space for bins. We are tempted to just dump it on this occasion and follow the rules after we get rid of this large amount of waste.

I've lived in several apartments in my life and there has always been some sort of bin storage area - it seems very odd for people to be expected to store rotting food in their kitchen for several days at a time.

if you are near shops surely there are some council bins nearby - I'd pop the rubbish in there rather than leave it on the streets...

Ialso recon there will be a comunal bin somewhere!

I used to live in a similar flat off a busy road. It had no bin outside and with four of us living in the property, the black bags used to pile up in the hall for days. Not nice! Have you considered a cheap storage container? Not a perfect solution, but at least the bagged rubbish would be contained - the smell couldn't escape and pests couldn't get in.

Ship it to the USA :p

.......To answer your question, back in the day we just bagged it up and put it outside early in hot weather (we had no intention of sharing our flat with rotting fish for five days).

We did rise the issue with the landlord, asking for outside bins, but he wasn't forthcoming. Unsurprisingly, the local vermin (cats) regularly ripped open the bags and it became an enviromental health issue. He got bins when the council got involved
    Back off man, I'm a scientist. ;)

    Daily Mail readers?
    :naughty:
Can you make sense of the Daily Mail’s effort to classify every inanimate object into those that cause cancer and those that prevent it ?
  • I would imagine all local Councils have rules about when rubbish can be put out.

My own Council doesn't allow us to put rubbish out for collection until after 6pm the day before collection.

People can (and I do...) complain to the Council if we see rubbish left out prior to the "allowed time slot".

That is "No it wouldn't be okay to put it out now. Sorry".

Presumably you leave the flat to go to work?

In which case, bag up the decayable stuff, and drop it in a public bin on your way to the bus/train/tube.
