Im watching it on Sky +. Just seen the sausage roll test. Yeah people might like the cheaper option, fat salt & sugar is tastey...but sometimes its about meat content & nutricianal value.0

I thought the chips test was interesting, too. Particularly how many more times Gregg had to cycle around the circuit in order to work off the more expensive, fattening chips.

switched off after 10 minutes-duck fat for chips-as a vegan that is a no-no---also who is paying for these programmes where people can fly to another country for fish-(license fee payers?):hello::coffee:Penny Pincher in training

It would have been more interesting if the fish had been prepared in the same batter to find out whether it was the quality of the batter rather than the taste of the fish that swung the vote.
The vote on the chips didn't surprise me - not sure I want to do all the exercise to burn off the additional calories though. For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

I was pretty disappointed by the programme and had expected more, silly me. It seemed too focused on what tasted nicer and not about eating nutritionally well for less. Therefore a complete let down. It's not rocket science to understand that triple cooked chips are going to be higher in calories than processed oven chips as well as tasting better.
If only the TV companies could/would produce helpful, informative and educational programmes on food and cooking that those on low incomes or have a desire to be healthy can learn from. They seem to be patronising, they place some kind of spin or encourage benefit bashing.
Do those making and presenting these programmes really think we are that stupid that stating the obvious or manipulating us how to think is ok ?.
What does everyone else think ?0 -
I didn't even keep watching for the fish n chips test! I found the programme very low in entertainment or information value! by far better advice on our very own Old Style thread!0

I found it irritating that the two men were pitted against each other in competition and seemed to be playing up to it; if the subject is interesting, only a moron needs this sort of childishness. It would have been far more helpful to (if they must) show us the highest quality/most expensive version alongside the cheaper option for comparison. People who can do the expensive version don't need advice as much as poorer people who have never learned to cook and live on ready meals. (I am not saying poor people are all numpties who can't cook and live on microwave burgers. I am poor and live on home cooked, healthy food.) Therefore I'd have like to have seen a comparison between ready battered oven fish and plain fish that you batter and fry. And fried chips vs oven vs home made oven chips. As for making ketchup; give me strength! Obviously, you could make it yourself if you have time, energy and I would bother if I had a food allergy, but I thought it a bit far fetched for what was a mainstream programme. 5/100

Not what I was expecting! I was hoping for good basic food for less, pretty disappointed with it tbh. Posh chips, all I saw was a big waste of potato!!0

In the blind taste test the cheapest supermarket sauce came second to the expensive homemade version. So for convenience and cost saving you would probably buy that.
It can often be the case that something homemade, especially if it is one-off, is much less cost effective than a ready made version. For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.
