Credit Card Rejection - Credit Score

I checked on MSE and did the pre-application check on the credit card I was looking for and 70% of people in my situation were accepted. However, my application was rejected.

I can't think of anything specifically that could be working against me, maybe I have too much credit.

However, I have had the free trials with the bigger credit score companies and I was wondering if there was any way to avoid the £14.99 monthly charge by Experian? A one off £5 or so wouldn't be too bad but I only really want to check it once and don't want the hassle of cancelling etc

  • Sign up to noodle for free - that will cover callcredit and it's quite a good service, pretty much all of my providers (Amex, First Direct, HSBC, Virgin, O2 and MBNA) report to them.

As for Experian/Equifax. If you sign up for another free trial using a different email address/credit card I believe it's possible to get another free trial (maybe worth researching this a bit first though). You could even be cheeky and try going via topcashback etc!

There are only 3 of them. Experian, Equifax and Call Credit.

You can get a statutory report for £2 which has all the data on it.
It will be offered on each CRAs website but may be hard to find.
They would rather you paid for the monthly package.

Noddle might be free but it is picky at who can sign up and it is only for Call Credit who are the smallest of the three.

Experian are a credit reference agency, not a credit score company. The credit scores that they charge you for are a waste of money as they do not reflect how a lender would see you. Best for you to get the £2 statutory report as advised above.

You can order a one-off report from all three credit reference agencies whenever you wish for £2. Here's the Experian £2 report link.
