Running a tablet while on charge

Hi

I have just bought a {cheap} tablet {Sumvision Cyclone Voyager} and due to being unable {at times} to get many of the TV channels I was thinking of running my tablet {through HDMI} and turning my TV into a "smart TV". but {and here is the crux} as the battery life is only around 4 or 5 hours before it needs a recharge I would like to keep the tablet charging from the mains while it is connected to my TV.
Does anyone know if this would cause any problem with the tablet battery {it would not be done daily}as I had 2 CnM tablets and both had to be returned as after 1 week with one and 2 weeks with the second, both stopped charging and that was just using it as a straight forward tablet {not connecting to a TV or anything else.
I know I MAY have just been unlucky with the 2 CnM ones but I would sooner not cause myself a problem if what I ask could cause problems :0)

Most likely the battery will have a shorter life other than that should be fine

It will be fine, the charger will mainly power the tablet, the built in charging circuit will cut current to the battery when its charged. Lion batteries are supposed to thrive on top ups - totally different to the old Nicad or Nimh types.

As to your other tablets, sudden failure to charge is a classic symptom of a fault that haunts a lot of tablets unfortunately. Its usually down to a poor quality charging or USB socket mounted to the tablet circuit board, especially if it has just been surface mount soldered on. The charging plug adds leverage and and pulling on it even lightly can break the sockets joint to the board.

Then you can't charge it. I try to only buy tablets that still have a 2.1mm charging socket as well as a USB charging ability so if one breaks you still have the other. I also find the long-pin 2.1mm DC sockets a bit more robust.

Either way extreme care needs to be taken when handling tablets whilst on charge to avoid the cable pulling on the plug in the tablet and to avoid any bumps or knocks to the plug, any tablet will last a whole lot longer if you do.

Hopefully your Sumvision has a decent quality socket in it.. I have not heard of it being a particular problem with them. (some tablet models have a shocking failure rate due to this issue)

Thank You for the indepth info, I was not sure if it would cause any problem but I am now happy to give it a go. As an older generation person I do treat all of my things with care even with the CnM tablets I bought an extra mains charger so I did not need to keep unplugging when I changed rooms and risking damaging the wires but to no avail {they still stopped charging} but with your explanation I understand now what the problem was. I hope now to have many happy hours using my new "toy"

    Thanks Again :0)

Your welcome, don't think I was saying you didn't treat them carefully - its a design fault on some tablets, if they made em with a properly supported socket it wouldn't happen. Nothing should break so easily. Enjoy your telly time!

  • If the "User Manual" is the same as that supplied with my Cyclone Voyager it refers to using the charger when switched on or off (the tablet presumably!) - page 3, II Basic Operation, 2.1 Charging and battery management.
