reclaiming mis sold PPI

In 1997 my husband and I took out a mortgage with the then Alliance and Leister (now Santander). At the same time we were advised that borrowers generally like you to take out a ppi and this was strongly recommended to us! Cardiff Pinnacle were the company attached to Santander who provided this said service in the event that one of us would be out of work. However I was employed by the NHS and would have been entitled to sick pay in the event of abscence from the workplace. We have payed £35/mth for 16 years .I contacted Santander regarding the same and I was informed that we were not entitled to any compensation as they could not ascertain as to whether we had been mis sold ppi inappropriately at that time.Where do we go from here? Anyone else in the same situation?

That is a valid sales method.

The FOS just turned down a case on that basis. Whilst it works with credit card and loan ppi but not mortgage.
