  • The rule changes are not across the board.
Other delivery services can still accept lithium batteries (and other dangerous goods) if they wish as long as they are not going via air freight and provided that they are packed in accordance with the relevant requirements for dangerous goods shipping.

I posted 4 medium parcels today, 3 in a main post office and 1 in a small village post office, they never asked me or anyone else in front of me what was in the packages or if they contained restricted items.

I've used four different Post Offices this week & only one asked me what's in the parcels.

    Why aren't they ALL asking?

I am still trying to get my head round the logic that a li-ion battery contained in or with a device is not hazardous but a li-ion battery sent on its own is. Up to 5Kg of batteries can be sent with a device but a 50g battery cannot be posted. The world has gone mad !

Hi, I rang Royal Mail today as I sell toys, and some of those need batteries. The lady said as long as the batteries were new in their original packaging then they could be sent with the toy. If they were inside the toy then they would be restricted.

    Hope this helps someone!

I was asked today at the post office if I had any restricted items in my parcels, which I didn't.

The lady was apologetic about having to ask - it looked as if her computer terminal prompted her to ask.

They are only doing their jobs, I know it's a bit of a pain, but it's unfair to take it out on the counter clerks

Asking if you have any restricted items is fair enough, but I had to tell them what was in each item specifically, they said if I didn't know, they couldn't be sent :(

    :)

Yes there is a prompt which has to be read to the Customer.
A 'not restricted' Barcode is scanned, for every parcel that complies.
There are different Barcodes for different restrictions.

A few years ago, I was asked at an airline check in desk if I had a dive torch (I was going to Sharm el Sheik). I said yes and the clerk asked me to hand it over as it was a restricted item. I handed the torch over containing 4 AA alkalines. She took it away and came back a few minutes later and said it was OK! Meanwhile, the queue behind me was fuming!
