That's the US and it says that the transaction can't be banked before shipping, not that they can't do the transaction.

It's all I could find, but VISA's policies don't differ that much from market to market.

Deposit means to settle the transaction i.e. take the money previously authorised. They're saying you should not do this until shipped. All you should do prior to this is authorise (and ringfence) the funds.

This is very rarely adhered to I find in smaller companies, though.
  • Hi all,

Thanks for the advice, thought I'd fill you in on what eventually happened.

I contacted the seller again, this time detailing my frustration, asking why the item had been sent and that I had now began the process of reclaiming my money through my bank.

Surprise surprise, they replied straight away once I mentioned the bank, apologised and said a full refund would be given on return of the item, including any return postage costs apparently. However, going by there previous conduct, and their lack of clarity on paying any return postage, I left the claim with my bank open.

The bank repaid me, and on the same same day I received a "you were out when we tried to deliver a parcel" note from the royal mail. It's a signed for package and assume it to be the refunded product.

I've written to the seller telling them I am not accepting the package, and will leave royal mail to return it to them, and they can deal with costs at their end. They have said that's fine.

Glad the whole situation is over, shame it had to happen like this.

I guess if anyone is reading this, the advice I would give for any online purchases from a suspect retailer is:
    1. Try and go for signed for delivery as you can easily refuse the item
    2. Always be polite with the seller, no matter how frustrating the situation. The more helpful/polite/non-agerssive you are, the more people will respond. And if they don't, you can always go to the bank...
    3. Always buy on credit card (plus visa if you can) for extra protection
