Views on best colour for kitchen floor & work surfaces

Hi all, about to start choosing our kitchen, and in my opinion my husbands old flat had a dark marble type work top that always looked dirty and smeared. We are renting at present and the flooring is a sand coloured tile and I think shows up all the crumbs and everything else, so my question is in your opinion what are the best colours to work with?

Thanks :-)

You also need to consider the door colouring but for me its usually light worktop = dark floor and dark worktop = light floor. But I'm not an interior designer. :D

The bet colour is the colour that you like and want.

It's not just the colours you need to think about, but the actual design/make up of the material.

In my current home for the kitchen floor I ended up going for a beigey/wheat coloured ceramic tile, which has some other light tones mixed in. I settled for these as I couldn't find exactly what I wanted in porcelain tiles & kitchen fitters were ready to lay them next day.

I actually thought I'd rue the day that I bought them with being a light colour and not porcelain, but what a blessing, they just never seem to look messy or dirty & I think this is because they have some texture to them, rather than just a flat smooth surface.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Exactly. I have white walls, oak doors, matt white tiles and beige speckled quartz worktops. It feels light and airy and I like it. But you might not. If you can use some kitchen design tool, you might get to see how colours work together. You do see some awful colour schemes on RightMove, and maybe they were intended, but maybe they chose each item separately without matching.

I'm restricted to a grey stone floor in my house (listed building). We're locking at the same tones for the work surface, possibly even the same stone, which would be prohibitively expensive if it were a large area, and look really flat and oppressive, but in a smallish area on an island we want to visually 'lose' to keep the room looking large we think it will work ok.

Want you like and want is easy definitely seems the best ways to go to me! We have chosen a few finishes that we think are particular to our tastes....because WE live here. If we ever decide to sell we can have paint the more unique rooms cream or something sedate :)

thanks all. I just don't want a colour that shows up all the smudges and every crumb. I do agree that flat colours show up more. We have a dark grey & black marble type tile in bathroom where we are renting and that seems to work well but the bathroom doesn't get as messy at the kitchen IMO
